"Crushed" [The Witch-Game Series, Book 1] by Kasi Blake (aka K. C. Blake)

Author's Book Description : The Noah girls have beauty, powers, and brains.

They use all three to play their games.

They blow the dust,

the boys are crushed,

and no one is ever the same.

Each year the Noah girls play a secret game— Crushed. The rules are simple.

1. Use wisdom to pick your target. The boy can’t be too weak or too strong-willed.

2. Blow the enchanted dust into your target’s face to enchant (Crush) him.

3. Give verbal commands and assign them tasks to perform throughout the year. The more tasks completed, the stronger the witch’s power grows.

4. At the end of the year, the witch with the most power wins cold, hard cash.

As if being a witch in high school isn’t complicated enough, Kristen picks the wrong boy to Crush. Zach is tall, handsome, and a little scary. Her Crush spell isn’t working on him like it has with the others. In fact, he is behaving the opposite of every other boy she’s Crushed, hating her instead of adoring her. Something is definitely wrong. After someone attempts to kill her, Kristen realizes there is more at risk than a few hundred dollars. She may be betting with her life.

My Book Review : 2 out of 5 stars. Going into her senior year of high school, Kristen is optimistic that this year will be great. However, from the first day things go from okay to terrible…
  • Her nemesis, Gina, calls her out in front of everyone.
  • Her sister bets her to “crush” Zach, one of the hottest/scariest boys in school, which leads to another rivalry unintended between her and her sister.
  • Now she has to deal with a Zach, who isn’t acting like a “crushed guy” should and instead of falling for her, he seems to hate her even more. Except for those rare occasions when he’s charming her…
From that day on life as Kristen knows it will never be the same. But will it be all for the best or will things just keep getting worse?

Wowza goes the drama! Suspenseful from beginning to end, this novel keeps its readers on their toes. It’s about witch/wizard families and what they’ll do for one another. While this dynamic cast is quiet entertaining, they also overload this novel with so much drama that if you don’t appreciate it then it’ll drag the readers down. That is actually what happened to me, it had too much drama for me to really like it. Nevertheless, Kristen, Zach, and their siblings create enough havoc in each other’s lives that if you are typically interested in dramatically suspenseful YA paranormal novels, that have a few romantic scenes included, then this might be more suited to you then me.

This wasn’t my type of novel. Yet, as I stated above this is for those who like suspenseful paranormal YA novels.

Author's Book Trailer :

Book Teaser(s) :
She wanted his jacket?
Zach blinked at her, completely thrown by her softly spoken command. She had obviously lost her mind. He didn’t like anyone touching his jacket, let alone wearing it. It had been the last gift his mother had given him before she’d died. Kristen Noah could pry it out of his cold, lifeless fingers if she wanted it. He certainly wasn’t handing it over to her like a lovesick idiot.
He’d planned to play along with her silly game, but now he didn’t think he could. He wasn’t going to pretend to date her. She was taking things too far. If she continued to push, he was going to push back. ~ within Chapter 3 - titled 'VENGEFUL'

Zach picked up the two champagne flutes, handed one to her, and lifted the other to make a toast. “To us.”
She sniffed the golden, bubbly contents.
“It’s non-alcoholic champagne,” he said with a wry smile. “What can I say? I’m a wild man.”
She giggled. ~ within Chapter 17 - titled 'BREATHLESS'
